Hela: of Mice & Magic Guide

How brewing works in Hela

Updated · Brewing

Quick answer

Brewing is Hela’s main progression system. Gather ingredients in the world, return to the witch’s cottage, and combine them with the recipe book. Brews do three jobs: help creatures and communities, improve your abilities, and unlock Remedies — special tools that open new routes and puzzle solutions.

The three products of brewing

Product What it does Example
Creature / community brews Help the people and creatures you meet A brew requested by a creature to restore something
Ability brews Improve the mouse’s own abilities Stamina and movement upgrades (see Whoosh!)
Remedies Special tools that change how you interact with the world Matchmaker, Recollector, Tailwind

The loop

  1. Explore forests, meadows, wetlands and burrows.
  2. Gather plants, fungi and other ingredients.
  3. Return to the cottage and open the recipe book.
  4. Brew the recipe you need.
  5. Use the result to help a creature, improve an ability, or open a route with a Remedy.
  6. Repeat with a new area or request.

FAQ

Where do I brew in Hela?

At the witch’s cottage, using the recipe book. The cottage is the hub you return to after gathering trips.

What do brews actually do?

Official material groups them into three uses: helping the people and creatures of the forest, improving your abilities, and unlocking special tools called Remedies that open new paths and puzzle solutions.

Can I brew the same potion repeatedly?

The game tracks spoiling a brew three times in a row (Toil and Trouble), so brewing is an interactive process rather than a one-click craft. Exact failure rules are not published; experiment at the cottage.
